Matthijs Uivel (1982) is a Dutch artist currently living and working in Amsterdam. His work often combines heavy thematics with simplified photographic gestures, dealing with discontinued sequences and outlining hidden messages.
Drawing inspiration from- and referring to, literature, philosophy and music. Like the lonerism music by John Frusciante (RHCP) or the existential writings of Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre. Using photography's absurd agency, asking for a contemplative offer and hinting at the sublime.
After his Masters degree in Photography at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Antwerp he teaches photography in Leiden, and also regularly exhibits and publishes printed work.
“I am ok with people judging on the decorative side of my work, though I couldn't care less for decorative art. It is like entry point of the maze that I like people to get lost in.”
